Britain’s biggest litter pick a huge success
A quarter of a million litter-pick heroes took to the streets, parks and beaches over the weekend of the 4-6 March 2016, for the biggest anti-litter campaign the UK has ever seen.
The occasion was to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday and the result was a massive 300,000 bags of rubbish, containing enough litter to stretch from Land’s End to John O’Groats!
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who got stuck in! Helping Hand Environmental were super proud to be named official equipment suppliers to Clean for the Queen and developed a range of kits and official Clean for the Queen GB livery litterpicker to mark the occasion!
The litter army, made up of volunteers aged from 18 months to 80, picked up an amazing 1,200 tonnes of litter, transforming places across the country and helping people to love where they live.
Community volunteers organised over 5,000 events, stretching from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland to Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
More than 400 local authorities helped out by supplying equipment to volunteers and collecting enough bags to fill over 30,000 wheelie bins!
Trafford Council pledged its support as part of their ‘Let’s Tidy Trafford Together’ initiative, supplying themed rubbish bags and litter-picking equipment and inspiring the whole community to clean-up. Over in Yorkshire, Doncaster Council held more than 40 events across the weekend.
Front-line litter fighters Oxclean, who organised an astonishing 81 litter-picking teams over the weekend.
Businesses that backed Clean for The Queen included Costa, John Lewis, Karcher, Greggs, McDonalds and KFC as well as Helping Hand! Costa also joined in and staff from more than 1,200 stores across the country were out doing their bit. McDonald’s organised 40 litter-picking events involving 80 stores nationwide.
The charities that worked shoulder to shoulder with the campaign are too many to mention but we would like to give a special shout out to the Women’s Institute whose members turned out in their droves, including Worlingworth WI in Suffolk. The group hit the streets to give the area a spruce-up, and even cleaned the village’s street signs.
We are delighted to announce that there will be another national campaign each March – The Great British Spring Clean
Thank you to everyone who shared their photos and stories of their events via social media. We have put together our gallery of photographs on our Facebook page.
