Spring Clean FAQs

Do I need permission to organise a litter pick?

In most cases, you do not need formal permission to organise a small community litter pick. However, you should contact your local council to confirm waste collection arrangements and check whether any specific permissions are required for public spaces.

How do I run a successful litter pick?

This can be done through a simple 5 step process:

Step 1: Choose Your Location

Identify a safe, accessible area in need of attention.

Step 2: Check with Your Local Authority

Confirm waste collection arrangements and any permissions required.

Step 3: Gather Equipment

Ensure volunteers have litter pickers, gloves, bags and hi-vis.

Step 4: Brief Volunteers on Safety

Cover safe handling, sharps awareness and road safety.

Step 5: Collect, Record & Celebrate

Track how many volunteers took part and how much was collected.

How do I litter pick safely?

Safety is essential when organising a litter pick. Our downloadable risk assessment and safety guidance documents help you identify hazards and brief volunteers appropriately. Always ensure appropriate PPE is worn and hazardous waste is reported to local authorities.

  • Gloves are essential

Who collects the rubbish after a litter pick?

Most local councils will collect bagged waste if you notify them in advance. Contact your council before the event to agree collection points and timings

How many litter pickers do I need?

As a guide:

  • 1 litter picker per volunteer
  • 1 sack hoop per 2-3 colunteers
  • Plenty of refuse sacks
  • Gloves in a range of sizes

Our Spring Clean Kits are designed to make this easy to plan.

How long should a litter pick last?

Most community litter picks run for 1–2 hours. This keeps volunteers engaged while allowing enough time to make a visible impact.

Are litter pickers suitable for children?

Yes, when supervised. Child-friendly litter pickers are lightweight and designed for smaller hands. Adult supervision is essential at all times.

Can litter pickers be reused?

Absolutely. Our litter pickers are designed for long-term use, making them ideal for ongoing community initiatives and regular clean-up events.
